Operating Office Building
599 Lexington Avenue
Since its inception
in the early 1980's, 599 Lexington Avenue has been an influential
force in the marketplace, the world of design and the day-to-day
lives of New Yorkers.
The 1 million-square-foot
office building was one of the first speculative properties to begin
construction in the east 50's when the market had not yet reached
that far east. It broadened the pioneering efforts made by Citicorp,
opening up the area to high quality tenancies and creating a premium
office market by transforming its 52nd Street neighborhood.
Its elegant,
distinctive geometry not only made a distinguishing statement on
the skyline but created a dramatic 50-foot-high lobby. The grand
proportions of this marble and glass interior provides a spectacular
setting for a specially-commissioned, 3-dimensional painting by
Frank Stella. Completing its list of impressive contributions is
an expansive, landscaped plaza that features a dramatic circular
skylight entrance to the newly refurbished subway entrance to oneof
the busiest stations in the city.

TIMES SQUARE - THE EPICENTER
OF THE WORLD

New
tower on way up
The last office
tower to rise at the Crossroads of the World formally began construction
yesterday, as developer Boston Properties broke ground on a 48-story
Times Square building.
Times Square
Tower will serve as New York headquarters for accounting firm Arthur
Andersen, which will move 3,000 employees there by early 2004 -
at an initial cost of $67.50 per square foot.
"What
was once the poster child for urban decay has not only become an
entertainment mecca, it has become one of the hottest corporate
addresses," said Michael Carey, president of the city's Economic
Development Corporation.
Times Square
Tower will stand on the south side of 42nd Street between Seventh
Avenue and Broadway. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill designed the
new building.

INDUSTRY INVOLVEMENT - D.T.M.,
INC. IN THE FOREFRONT
 Elevator Escalator
Safety Foundation (EESF) Executive Director Ray Lapierre recently
met with the Board of the Elevator Conference of New York (ECNY)
to determine ways to get more New York City area schools involved
with the Safe-T Rider© program. The discussion covered many suggestions,
all centering around enlisting more volunteers in the area to reach
the remaining 26 of the 32 school districts not yet receiving the
program. Approximately 10,531 second graders from New York, out
of a potential of nearly 100,000, participated this year.
New York City
would have a great impact on the EESF, both in terms of the population
of second graders and the large portion of resources obtained from
the area. As an outcome of the meeting, the EESF will intensify
its efforts to recruit more volunteers. The EESF will send Program
Director Barbara Allen to New York in April for the Buildings NYª
trade show, and she will take the opportunity to visit with potential
volunteers. In addition, EESF will launch an appeal for volunteers
through all New York companies and through regional and local offices
of the major manufacturers, as well as enlist more volunteers from
the International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC) retiree
ranks. The EESF will also increase the information flow on EESF
activities to area individuals and companies.
EESF Directors
William McLean, Nick Montesano, William Boppert (alternate
director) and Lapierre also met with the president of the New York
City Transit (NYCT), Larry Reuter. Reuter and his staff will assist
EESF in getting more schools involved with the Safe-T Rider© program.
Over 500,000 New York City children use the NYCT to get to school
as part of the systemÕs Free Pass Program, which would be a natural
fit for both organizations. Under Reuter, NYCT has been a long-time
EESF supporter and has pioneered many successful public awareness
efforts using EESF materials, which have reached millions of riders.
EESF, ECNY and the NYCT will also investigate other ways to reach
more riders to the mutual benefit of everyone in the industry.
